To: ham-digital@ucsd.edu Well, I have seen questions and answers here ranging from the KPC's to Baycom, but have seen nothing on the new PK-96 by AEA. This would be one of my first choices for a high speed packet modem, and I was wondering if anyone here has any compliments or gripes about it. Thanks... The current test are subjective on satellites and some DX HF. The next step is to take the output to my Soundblaster and digitize the output into the two stereo channels. The resultant will undergo some analysis to try and determine signal to noise ratio. I was going to put an MFJ in the test also but they would not sell me one at the Jacksonville Hamfest. The dealers do not seem to have them either. More vaporware from Mississippi. I plan to test ssb and cw as well as some of the hf digital modes. If you have some suggestions of tests you would like to see contact me at ggs@eule.lanl.gov. As time permits the units are going to be loaned to other hams for subjective input. I plan to ask both hf types and vhf weak signal types to help. Perhaps this effort will determine just who is King of the hill. By the way I bought both of the units and have no association with Timewave or JPS hopefully the results can be published in one of the ham mags. 73 de Jerry KC5EGG ------------------------------ Date: 18 Sep 1994 12:16:50 GMT From: ihnp4.ucsd.edu!dog.ee.lbl.gov!agate!howland.reston.ans.net!EU.net!sunic!isgate!news.rhi.hi.is!bnt@network.ucsd.edu Subject: Getting started on 56k. We have been using 1200bps for many years and 9k6 is under way. But we want something faster like 56kbps. But how?? Are there any "off-the-shelve" kits?? We have heard of something called "56kbps on a pc-slot-card" witch has the radio and the modem on a single pc-slot If you have any info, experience or anything to say. I am just beginning to get my JNOS v1.10g station up and running here and I have a few things I'd like cleared up. If you can help me, please let me know. 1) What is the purpose of the NET.RC file? 2) What does a typical NET.RC file look like? 3) When I log into the mbox portion of the system from my console, and I post a message to a user at an AX.25 bbs system, where does the file go when I finish typing it and enter the /ex?? I use "L> user" but cannot get a listing of the file. Am I looking in the wrong place? 4) What determines the method of mbox message transfer (ax25 vs. smtp) that JNOS will use when transferring mail between two JNOS stations? These things may be trivial to the experienced JNOS user, but to me they are puzzling. I have had experience as the sysop of an MSYS bbs a few years ago, but JNOS is totally new! Some other pacsats use PSK (Phase Shift Keying). The KPC-9612 does not have a modem disconnect header feature, so you cannot add a PSK modem to the KPC-9612 to connect to these pacsats. I'm hoping a future version of the KPC-9612 will fix this. The AEA PK-96, however, does allow you to connect a PSK modem to it, and should be "compatible" with all the pacsats. --- ======================================================================= Kenneth E.
